The Initium product lineup from Asetek has been long talked about, but today, we got our first glimpse of the sim racing products that make up this lineup. In this guide, I’m going to look at the entire Initium product range, and explore exactly what it is, and who it’s for. I’ll look at prices, along with release dates.
Asetek are known for producing some of the best high-end sim racing wheels and pedals, exclusive to PC. This new product lineup is a big diversion from this, with a focus on console sim racing at a much lower price point. Asetek state that Initium means “to begin”, “to start” or “to initiate”, making it a great name for a more entry-level range of hardware.
This new lineup focuses entirely on more affordable products, and at launch includes a new wheel base, steering wheel, pedal set and cockpit.
All of these products are designed to be console compatible with Xbox consoles (upon the release of an upcoming Xbox-compatible steering wheel). These are the first products that Asetek has launched that will be able to be used with Xbox consoles, making them a really big milestone for the Danish sim racing brand. Currently we don’t have a date for the Xbox compatible steering wheel, so at launch, these products are PC-compatible only.

At the heart of Asetek’s Initium range is their new wheel base. It follows the distinct styling from the larger high-performance wheel bases, and looks almost like a Forte wheel base cut in half.
This smaller racing wheel base still utilises direct drive technology with a servo motor and low-latency motor controller. It is capable of outputting 5.5Nm of peak torque, putting it right alongside other budget direct drive wheels like the Fanatec CSL DD.
While the pea torque output is much lower than Asetek’s other wheel bases, it maintains a lot of the technology. It boasts 16,384 degrees of responsiveness, delivering feedback every 0.022 degrees of rotation. And this is thanks to the 14bit encoder.

Along side the new wheel base is a brand new pedal set. As standard this Initium pedal set is a two pedal configuration with a throttle and brake. As far as we know, neither pedal uses load cell technology, meaning they are likely to rely on hall effect sensors to measure the pedal travel.
While the pedal set comes with just two pedals, the included base plate does have space for a third clutch pedal. Asetek has also stated that a load cell or even a hydraulic upgrade kit will be available. This will let sim racers start with the Initium pedal set, and upgrade to more advanced and realistic technology over time.
This upgrade mentality has always been at the heart of Asetek’s philosophy, meaning there is less waste, and less expense for a sim racer to upgrade their hardware. It’s good to see this continue over to their entry-level lineup.

Rounding out the core offering of the Asetek Initium lineup is the new steering wheel. This wheel has a circular design, making it incredibly universal, much like wheels from Logitech and Fanatec.
It features a range of inputs like other Asetek wheels, including buttons, with four of them being backlit. There are two encoders, a D-pad for navigating menus, and 9 built in RGB rev lights. For a budget steering wheel, this is pretty feature packed with a total of 21 inputs.
Around the back are a set of magnetic shifters, and the grip is designed for maximum durability. This is a wheel designed for purpose. It may not be the best looking wheel design out of the gate, but sure looks like an incredibly versatile one.

As well as the core lineup of a wheel base, steering wheel and pedals, Asetek is also adding a cockpit to the Initium lineup. This is a first for Asetek, who up until now have stuck to hardware and peripherals. We don’t know too much about the Initium cockpit yet, but it looks to be similar to offerings such as the Next Level Racing F-GT.
Asetek are calling this a 2-in-1 cockpit. This means it will probably offer multiple seating positions such as a GT and formula option, much like the F-GT.
