Project Motor Racing is the latest in a long line of racing sim games, best known for their work on Project Cars. Developed by Straight4Studios, the founder Ian Bell is known for developing popular titles such as GTR and Project Cars.
This gives Project Motor Racing some real heritage, and the game promises to deliver a simulation-focused experience. This means that while you can race Project Motor Racing with a controller, a racing wheel is the primary way this racing sim is supposed to be played.
In this buyer’s guide, I’m going to look at the best racing wheel for Project Motor Racing. With the game launching on all platforms including Xbox, PS5 and PC, I’ll look at my recommendations for the best wheel on each of these platforms.
If you don’t want to read our entire article, below is a quick overview of the top wheels for Project Motor Racing in each category. Continue reading below for more info on each of these wheels and why we chose them.

The Fanatec GT DD Pro has long been the go-to racing wheel for PlayStation sim racers. It is one of Fanatec’s most popular racing wheels and for good reason. It took the fantastic force feedback that was pioneered in the small CSL DD wheel base, added PlayStation compatibility, and even worked with Gran Turismo 7 developers to design the steering wheel.
You can pick up the GT DD Pro wheel either individually, or as part of a complete bundle. The bundle offers better value for money, however, I’d strongely recommend buying the wheel base individually. This is because you then have a choice of which steering wheel you wish to use. The included Gran turismo branded steering wheel isn’t the best that Fanatec produce.

For Project Motor Racing, this small direct drive wheel is ideal. The force feedback details are excellent, and although the force feedback in PMR isn’t class-leading, this Fanatec wheel portrays them as good as any wheel.
This small direct drive wheel is fairly decently priced for the performance you get. It is excellent in Project Motor Racing and widely supported by most racing sims.

While there are plenty of Xbox racing wheels available, including the excellent budget-friendly CSL DD. I’d recommend the more premium Fanatec Clubsport DD+. This is a much newer wheel than the CSL DD or the GT DD Pro I recommend above.
It released at the end of 2023, and has had a range of force feedback algorithm updates since. The DD+ wheel base sits as part of Fanatec’s mid-range Clubsport range. This is above the CSL range that the CSL DD belongs to, and is below the more premium Podium range, that the new Podium DD wheel is part of.

The Clubsport DD+ produces 15Nm of peak torque, which is a big step up from the 8Nm in the GT DD Pro and CSL DD. This allows for a much larger range of force feedback details to be felt while driving in Project Motor Racing.
It allows really powerful cars such as the hypercars in PMR to shine. Subtle track details are present alongside the heavier forces from kerb strikes and weight balance changes. If you’re looking for a really well-rounded, mid-range to premium Xbox racing wheel for Project Motor Racing, the Clubsport DD+ ticks all boxes.
--- Article continues below --- Shop Sim Racing DiscountsFanatec’s ClubSport DD+ may be slightly pricey for the performance. However, not many Xbox-compatible racing wheels can keep up with the power and detail of the force feedback that this Clubsport DD+ wheel delivers. Pair that with the huge number of Xbox-compatible Fanatec steering wheels, and you have a winner.
| Compatibility | PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Ready |
| Motor Technology | Direct Drive |
| Torque | 15Nm |
| Dimensions | 46.5cm x 39.5cm x 25.5cm |

Racing Wheel – MOZA R3
Compatibility – Xbox, PC

Not too long ago, recommending a budget racing wheel meant opting for a Logitech or Thrustmaster product. These two brands were two of the best known sim racing wheel manufacturers and both had budget options available. Well, they both still do. However, other brands have entered the budget racing wheel space, and some are doing it better.
MOZA Racing is one of these brands. They seemingly have a racing wheel for every price range, and the MOZA R3 is their cheapest wheel. This is an extremely small direct drive racing wheel that is both Xbox and PC compatible. This is ideal for those playing Project Motor Racing on an Xbox console.

The R3 delivers 3.9Nm of peak torque which is incredibly impressive given its tiny size. This force feedback comes across incredibly well, with a wide range of FFB effects and details present. While impressive, the low amount of torque can be a limiting factor for those looking to grow their sim racing setup.
The MOZA R3 has successfully dethroned the popular Logitech G923 as my favourite cheap racing wheel. This is thanks to its much improved force feedback over the G923, similar price tag and Xbox compatibility.
| Compatibility | Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC |
| Motor Technology | Direct drive |
| Torque | 3.9Nm |
| USB Refresh Rate | 1000Hz |

Simucube is seen as one of the very best sim racing wheel manufacturers around. They dominated the premium wheel base market with their SC2 wheel base lineup, and the Simucube 3 builds upon this.
The new SC3 improves on the older wheel base in various ways. The Force feedback has new tricks, mounting is easier and steering wheel compatibility is better thanks to its new Quick Release technology.
There are three versions of the SC3 to choose from, Sport, Pro and Ultimate. Both the Sport and Pro models are excellent choices, with the Pro delivering a big step in peak torque for a relatively small cost increase. The Ultimate wheel base is still reserved for only the most hardcore of sim racers due to its insanely high price tag.
The Simucube 3 Pro builds on the success of the Simucube 2 wheel. It improves the force feedback by adding a range of telemetry effects, and remains one of the very best wheels you can buy.
Choosing a racing wheel for any brand presents some key challenges. You need to consider compatibility with both your game, and your console or platform. Then there is your budget to take into account, and whether you are sticking to a single specific ecosystem.
This can make it a bit of a mine field when choosing your next racing wheel. Below are a few key areas to consider before buying.
The force feedback should be one of the key buying decisions. After all, its the most important part of any wheel base. Ensuring the force feedback is of a good quality, and is strong enough for your needs is crucial. I’d recommend the following force feedback ranges below.

Just as important as performance is the compatibility of your wheel. After all, if it isn’t compatible with your setup, you won’t be able to use it. Compatibility falls into a few areas.
First, your wheel needs to be compatible with your console. Most wheels are only compatible with one console platform. This will be either Xbox or PlayStation. Some premium wheels are only compatible with PC.
Next, you’ll need to check compatibility with your other peripherals. Wheel bases typically only work with same-brand steering wheels, although some offer third-party compatibility. Always check this before buying.
Finally, game compatibility is important, as some games aren’t compatible with every racing wheel. This is more common for console sim racing titles.
We’ve tested Project Motor Racing with a large number of wheels, both in our own studio and at the Sim Racing Expo in 2025. Among those that our team has tested, the racing wheels in this guide have been the best performing across each category.
Project Motor Racing can be enjoyed with either a controller or a wheel. It is a simcade racing game meaning it bridges the gap between arcade and simulation. This style of game is perfect for both input methods.
Yes, PMR is available on both Xbox and PlayStation consoles as well as PC.
