F1 2020 setup guide overview – Britain

The British Grand Prix requires a very balanced car setup in F1 2020, and rewards brave aggressive driving. Below is our recommended Silverstone F1 2020 setup guide. To see specific car setups, click any of the car setups above to view the full setup, below will give you a little reasoning about why we setup our car in this way for Silverstone.

The British GP at Silverstone features a very fast track layout, with a variety of fast straights, quick direction changes and a technical first sector. Because of this mix of elements your car setup for Silverstone should be balanced enough to be quick in all of these different sectors.

Setups in F1 2020 reward a more rear heavy downforce car, especially when the track features higher speed corners just as Silverstone does. You will want your overall downforce to be a little less than average, and lower at the front than rear. This is so we don’t lose too much top speed down the long straights. The increased rear downforce will help the car grip through the quick direction changes, keeping the car very stable.

The first and last sectors feature some rather slow technical sections of track, and these all involve high traction acceleration zones. Exiting out of turns 4, 7 and 17 all require heavy acceleration at low speed. And all of these acceleration zones lead on to long straights, so maximising your traction is key!

Setup your on-throttle diff to be low to ensure you get the best traction possible. This, combined with lower tyre pressures, and a higher downforce rear end will all help you get the power down without too much wheelspin.

Keep your off-throttle diff high, as this doesn’t affect your traction on heavy acceleration. Instead, this will keep the rear wheels turning at speed through the corners.

Beacuse of the quick direction changes, you’ll need a slightly stiffer setup. This, plus long sweeping corners at speed mean Silverstone is very hard on tyres. This prevents us from running any form of aggressive suspension geometry. Instead you should look to increase your camber angle and toe setup. This will help keep the car stable through the quick corners, and will be much softer on your tyres. This comes with the downside of losing a little responsiveness, but a stiffer suspension will help this.

As mentioned, Silverstone features a lot of quick direction changes, so we don’t want our car to be too soft. Driving Silverstone in F1 2020, requires an average to stiff suspension setup. This includes the anti-roll bars which should be a little stiffer than average.

We tend to setup the front suspension to be a little stiffer than the rear for our F1 2020 Silverstone setup. This gives a little more responsiveness at the front during the quick direction changes, especially through Maggotts and Becketts.

Again, we will stick with a low ride height for our Silverstone setup to minimise drag. And we will normally look to keep the brake pressure and bias reasonably balanced. There are a few bigger stops, but not many, and a lot of quick braking zones. A balanced braking setup works best around Silverstone.

Finally, higher front pressures and lower rear tyre pressures prove effective at the British GP. The higher front pressures allow for a more responsive car, whilst the lower tyre pressures at the rear give better traction.

How To Best Drive The British Grand Prix Circuit in F1 2020

With our F1 2020 Silverstone setup covered, it’s now time to give you a few tips for a quick lap around Silverstone. The revised track layout here favors the brave, and being aggressive throughout the lap yields the best lap times.

The first sector around the British GP track is reasonably slow paced, with turn providing no overtaking chance. Instead, try to stay flat through turn 1 and you can sometimes pull a good overtake in to turn 3. The track is very wide through turns 2, 3 and 4 and allows you to dive down the inside of the car in front with little consequence.

You may however want to wait to try and overtake on the long straight which follows turn 5. This is DRS assisted so if you make a last minute move in to turn 3, you may be vulnerable to be re-overtaken on this straight.

You will want to be riding the kerbs through Maggotts and Becketts, with the first part of this tricky section being flat out. Brake a little earlier than feel natural in to the final part of Becketts to give the best acceleration out on to the long straight.

One of our favourite overtaking spots, and where the AI drivers in F1 2020 are actually a little slow, is in to turn 15. This is a high speed corner with a small braking zone, but you can sometimes pull alongside the driver in front and force a move. Then stay on the inside of the chicane which follows to make the move stick.

Finally, accelerating early is the key to getting a good run out of the last corner. Just be careful not to spin up your rear wheels, as this is the one place where traction is really limited.
