What to look for when buying a PS5 racing wheel gift

Buying a sim racing wheel as a gift can be daunting and confusing, especially if you aren’t a sim racer. There is a lot of terminology to get your head around to really decipher which PS5 racing wheel would make the best gift.

I’m going to do my best to list the main things that you should look out for when buying a PS5 racing wheel as a gift for somebody. These top tips should help make your gift buying a little easier, hopefully!

Wheel base vs steering wheel

I’ve mentioned the term wheel base a few times in this guide. This refers to the component that sits behind the steering wheel. The wheel base houses the internal motor and electronics that make the steering wheel work.

Think of a racing wheel base as the hub of any racing wheel setup. Every racing wheel needs one to be mounted to. And this is where your connection points for your console and other peripherals are.

Force Feedback

Force feedback describes the forces that are translated from the game to the steering wheel. These make the steering wheel move and vibrate to allow the driver to feel how the car is behaving in-game.

The stronger the force feedback (measured in Nm), the stronger, heavier and more aggressive the steering wheel will feel when racing.

Entry-level racing wheels such as the Logitech G923 generate around 2.5Nm of torque. This is enough to feel the basic forces that are being felt through your car.

Mid-level racing wheels such as the Fanatec CSL DD and GT DD Pro generate around 5-8Nm of torque. This is strong enough for a lot of sim racers. This will portray most of the forces felt in-game to a strong level.

High-end racing wheels such as the Podium F1 and Simucube racing wheels can generate over 20Nm of torque. This amount of torque is strong enough to give you a true workout while racing.

Direct drive racing wheels

I have referred to direct drive racing wheels in this PS5 racing wheel gift guide a few times. This describes the technology inside the wheel base.

Direct drive refers to the internal motor being directly mounted to the steering wheel shaft. This provides the best force feedback detail and strength and is the crème de la crème of sim racing technology.

Some non-direct drive wheel bases such as the Logitech G923 include gears and/or belts that connect the motor to the driveshaft. These wheel bases are generally less powerful and don’t produce force feedback that is as crisp or detailed as direct drive racing wheels do.

Compatibility

When buying a racing wheel as a gift, compatibility is a big feature to look out for. If you are looking to buy a PS5 racing wheel gift, you need to ensure it works with PlayStation 5 consoles.

All of the racing wheels I have spoken about above are PlayStation 5 compatible, and make fantastic gifts for any PS5 sim racer.

Some of the PS5 racing wheels above can also be Xbox-compatible. Generally, they will require a separate Xbox-compatible steering wheel to be purchased to enable Xbox compatibility.
