Best premium racing wheel for PS5 – Podium F1
As Christmas gifts come, receiving the Fanatec Podium PS5 for PS5 is up there with the absolute best. This racing wheel is one of the best on the market, sitting firmly in the premium racing wheel category.
This PS5 racing wheel is officially branded with the Formula 1 logo, and features an exclusive F1 licensed steering wheel which cannot be purchased individually.
It also features a unique coloured DD1 wheel base which is capable of 20Nm of force feedback strength. If you are purchasing this as a gift for a sim racer, 20Nm of torque is a lot!
This racing wheel includes the wheel base (the part of the wheel that includes the motor to power the wheel), a quick release module (to allow you to remove the steering wheel), and the steering wheel.
Combined, this bundle is completely compatible with PlayStation 5 consoles. And what makes this even better, is that if you swap the steering wheel out for an Xbox-compatible wheel, the wheel base becomes compatible with Xbox consoles as well.
If you have a large budget for this sim racing Christmas gift, the Podium F1 wheel is among the best PS5 racing wheels you can buy.
Best mid-range racing wheel for PS5 – GT DD Pro
The Fanatec GT DD Pro racing wheel is one of the best mid-range to high-end racing wheels for PS5. It is a direct drive racing wheel, meaning it has extremely good performance at up to 8Nm of torque. And the detail and fidelity of the force feedback is incredibly impressive.
The GT DD Pro fits into Fanatec’s ecosystem, and is compatible with a large range of steering wheels and peripherals. You can also pick up the GT DD Pro in a complete bundle which includes a steering wheel and pedals.
The bundle includes everything you need to go sim racing. This makes this bundle the perfect gift for someone who currently doesn’t own a racing wheel but wants to start sim racing.
The bundle is completely compatible with PlayStation 5 consoles. And much like the Podium F1 bundle above, the GT DD Pro wheel base can also become Xbox-compatible when paired with an Xbox -compatible steering wheel.
Best budget racing wheel for PS5 – Logitech G923
The Logitech G923 has been the king of budget sim racing wheels for many years, and that hasn’t changed recently. The G923 may be a couple of years old by the time we reach Christmas 2022, but that hasn’t stopped it from being dethroned.
The Logitech G923 is a complete sim racing bundle, and it includes everything you need to start sim racing. The wheel base comes with the steering wheel attached, and this isn’t removable or interchangable like the previous Fanatec racing wheels.
But that doesn’t really matter, as the steering wheel is a really nice design, and features a lot of inputs to allow you to control your car in-game.
There are also a set of pedals included, which includes a clutch, brake and throttle pedal. These perform well for the price range, as does the racing wheel. The force feedback is of a good quality, but isn’t as strong as the previous Fanatec wheels.
If you are shopping for a racing fan who doesn’t currently own a racing wheel, this is a great gift option. It includes a table clamp so can be mounted at any desk or table, allowing you to race from almost anywhere.
Best PS5 F1 Steering Wheel
If the person you are buying a gift for already owns a wheel base, getting a steering wheel attachment is a great idea. Many racing wheels feature steering wheels which can be detached and swaped out.
Below are the best three individual PS5 steering wheels which would make the perfect Christmas gift. The top two steering wheels below are for Fanatec wheel bases. The Ferrari steering wheel below that is for Thrustmaster wheel bases.
It is important to purchase the right steering wheel to match the wheel base. Fanatec steering wheels won’t be compatible with Thrustmaster wheel bases and vice versa.
Fanatec Formula V2.5X
The Fanatec Formula V2.5X is one of the best formula-style steering wheels. This wheel is PS5 compatible, as well as being Xbox-compatible, making it the perfect Christmas gift for a sim racer regardless of which console they race on.
The Formula V2.5X is Fanatec’s premium formula-style steering wheel, and it features a whole host of functions allowing you any sim racer to easily control their car in-game.
There are a range of push buttons, rotary encoders, thumb encoders, joysticks and paddle shifters, all of which are fully functional when racing on PlayStation 5.
Fanatec McLaren GT3 V2
The Fanatec McLaren GT3 V2 is a more budget-oriented steering wheel. And just like the Formula V2.5X above, the McLaren GT3 V2 is PS5 compatible when paired with a PS5 racing wheel base.
The McLaren GT3 V2 steering wheel replicates the design from McLaren GT3 race cars. It looks very similar, and features very similar inputs. The main difference is the addition of a screen on the top of the wheel.
The McLaren GT3 V2 features fewer inputs than the Formula V2.5X, which allows the price to be lower. This PS5 steering wheel is more budget focused but is still a brilliant steering wheel option for any PS5 sim racer.
Ferrari SF1000 – Best Thrustmaster PS5 racing wheel
The third PS5 steering wheel on our list is the Thrustmaster SF1000. This wheel is a replica of the steering wheel used by Sebastian Vettel in his Ferrari Formula 1 car during the 2020 season.
Unlike the two previous steering wheels, the Thrustmaster SF1000 is only compatible with Thrustmaster wheel bases. So if you are looking to purchase a gift for a sim racer who uses a Thrustmaster wheel base, this is a great option.
This wheel is completely compatible with PS5 Thrustmaster racing wheels, and it also works with PC and Xbox consoles as well.
All of the buttons, encoders and inputs on the wheel work with PlayStation 5 consoles, allowing you to feel just like Sebastian Vettel when sim racing.
What to look for when buying a PS5 racing wheel gift
Buying a sim racing wheel as a gift can be daunting and confusing, especially if you aren’t a sim racer. There is a lot of terminology to get your head around to really decipher which PS5 racing wheel would make the best gift.
I’m going to do my best to list the main things that you should look out for when buying a PS5 racing wheel as a gift for somebody. These top tips should help make your gift buying a little easier, hopefully!
Wheel base vs steering wheel
I’ve mentioned the term wheel base a few times in this guide. This refers to the component that sits behind the steering wheel. The wheel base houses the internal motor and electronics that make the steering wheel work.
Think of a racing wheel base as the hub of any racing wheel setup. Every racing wheel needs one to be mounted to. And this is where your connection points for your console and other peripherals are.
Force feedback describes the forces that are translated from the game to the steering wheel. These make the steering wheel move and vibrate to allow the driver to feel how the car is behaving in-game.
The stronger the force feedback (measured in Nm), the stronger, heavier and more aggressive the steering wheel will feel when racing.
Entry-level racing wheels such as the Logitech G923 generate around 2.5Nm of torque. This is enough to feel the basic forces that are being felt through your car.
Mid-level racing wheels such as the Fanatec CSL DD and GT DD Pro generate around 5-8Nm of torque. This is strong enough for a lot of sim racers. This will portray most of the forces felt in-game to a strong level.
High-end racing wheels such as the Podium F1 and Simucube racing wheels can generate over 20Nm of torque. This amount of torque is strong enough to give you a true workout while racing.
Direct drive racing wheels
I have referred to direct drive racing wheels in this PS5 racing wheel gift guide a few times. This describes the technology inside the wheel base.
Direct drive refers to the internal motor being directly mounted to the steering wheel shaft. This provides the best force feedback detail and strength and is the crème de la crème of sim racing technology.
Some non-direct drive wheel bases such as the Logitech G923 include gears and/or belts that connect the motor to the driveshaft. These wheel bases are generally less powerful and don’t produce force feedback that is as crisp or detailed as direct drive racing wheels do.
When buying a racing wheel as a gift, compatibility is a big feature to look out for. If you are looking to buy a PS5 racing wheel gift, you need to ensure it works with PlayStation 5 consoles.
All of the racing wheels I have spoken about above are PlayStation 5 compatible, and make fantastic gifts for any PS5 sim racer.
Some of the PS5 racing wheels above can also be Xbox-compatible. Generally, they will require a separate Xbox-compatible steering wheel to be purchased to enable Xbox compatibility.
Are PS4 steering wheels compatible with PS5?
If any of the racing wheels that you are looking at buying as a gift mention that they are PS4 racing wheels, don’t worry. All PS4 racing wheels are also compatible with PS5 consoles. This was confirmed by Sony around the time of the launch of the PlayStation 5 console.
