Thanks to the EA Sports F1 game series, F1 sim racing has become increasingly popular. While racing games such as F1 24 can be played with a controller, adding a racing wheel will increase your immersion and can make you faster.

When it comes to buying an F1 racing wheel, what should you look for? Are budget-friendly wheels such as the Logitech G923 good enough to race Formula 1 games, or should you look at a steering wheel explicitly designed to replicate a real-world F1 steering wheel?

In this sim racing buyer’s guide, I’ll compare various F1 wheels across various budgets to help you narrow down which wheel is best for you.

Is a racing wheel worth it for the F1 games?

The benefit of using a racing wheel and pedals for F1 24 and other Formula 1 games is that your immersion will greatly increase. Racing with a controller is a lot of fun, however, it doesn’t translate the experience of being behind the wheel at 180mph.

If you invest in a physical racing wheel and pedal set, you can truly feel like you are sitting behind the wheel in the cockpit of an F1 car. Many F1 steering wheels will also include many more inputs, such as additional buttons, toggles, and encoders. These can be used to control various aspects of your car in the game. For example, you can quickly adjust your brake bias and differential in F1 24. You can also use the additional buttons to activate DRS or your pit limiter.

Which F1 steering wheel is the best?

There are a wide variety of different racing wheels that will all work well in F1 24 and other F1 games. Some racing wheels like the Logitech G923 aren’t designed to look like an F1 wheel, however, they can still be used and offer great value at a good price point.

Upgrading to a steering wheel that is designed to look like a wheel that could be used in a real-world Formula 1 car will increase your immersion. It can add to the experience of driving a Formula 1 car.

Below is an overview of the F1 wheels that I’d recommend to anyone looking to purchase one. Each wheel has its own benefits and drawbacks, which I’ll discuss in more detail in this buyers guide.

What makes an F1 steering wheel different?

Formula-style steering wheels are generally not round, feature a screen for telemetry read-outs and include a whole host of inputs on the wheel. The more rectangular style allows drivers to better see over the top of the wheel and allow for better manoeuvrability when rotating the steering wheel.

The screen can vary in size. Sometimes, you’ll find a smaller screen that provides simple feedback on things such as live speed, RPM, and other telemetry. With more premium Formula-style steering wheels, you’ll find larger screens capable of displaying a lot of information at once.

Finally, the steering wheel is always designed to be as ergonomic and practical as possible. This includes a wide range of inputs including buttons and dials. These allow for quick changes to the car while travelling at high speeds.

Fanatec F1 Esports V2

Fanatec first produced the F1 Esports steering wheel a few years ago and worked with Formula 1 to include their branding. It was the official steering wheel for F1 Esports competitions. In 2023, Fanatec reworked the wheel and released a second version which is the current version available for sale in 2024.

The F1 Esports V2 is constructed of high-quality aluminium to provide strength and durability. The hand-grips are wrapped in Alcantara giving it a true motorsport aesthetic. While the Alcantara may not be to everybody’s liking, we think it works well to bring the whole look together.

The front of the wheel features a selection of push buttons but lacks the rotary encoders found on all of the other wheels on this list.

If you are looking for an entry-level Formula-style steering wheel, then the Fanatec F1 Esports V2 may be your best choice due to its low price point and great build quality.

Thrustmaster SF1000

This steering wheel is perfect if you’re a Formula 1 fan or a Ferrari fan. The Thrustmaster SF1000 steering wheel is a replica of the steering wheel used in the Ferrari F1 car during the 2020 Formula 1 season, and is still very similar to the steering wheel that Charles Leclerc is using during the 2024 Formula 1 season.

For Formula 1 fans, the SF1000 offers so many amazing things. It features a real carbon fibre faceplate for an authentic look and comes with all of the buttons and encoders found on the real Ferrari steering wheel.

There are 25 inputs, including a selection of buttons and 7 encoders, that can all be used to control your car mid-race. The crowning glory of this steering wheel is the huge 4.3-inch screen. A screen of this size doesn’t appear on any other steering wheel within this price range.

The screen can be used to showcase real telemetries, such as tyre temperatures, lap times and more. There is also a series of rev LEDs and flag LEDs surrounding the screen.

If you are a Formula 1 fan, this sim racing wheel is a great option. During my time using this steering wheel, the added immersion really adds to the sense of sitting behind the wheel of a Ferrari F1 car. And when it isn’t in use, it certainly looks good sitting proudly on display!

Fanatec Formula V2.5X

The long-term favourite for many sim racers is the Fanatec Formula series of wheels. All of the Formula wheels that Fanatec has released are catered to an open-wheel style of sim racing. The most recent F1 steering wheel that Fanatec has produced is the Formula V2.5X.

This steering wheel is so popular that Fanatec often re-releases this wheel with a unique colourway. I have the F1 24 colourway which featured the Formula 1 logo and a blue forged carbon fibre faceplate.

This steering wheel is an evolution of the Formula V2, which has been popular for years. The V2.5 and V2.5X feature upgraded shifter paddles, which come pre-installed with the ClubSport Magnetic Paddle Module. Thanks to the magnetic functionality, these paddles allow for much crisper shifting.

Like other steering wheels on this list, the Formula V2.5X features a wide range of inputs. It has 11 buttons, multiple encoders, and multi-position switches mounted onto a carbon fibre faceplate.

While this steering wheel doesn’t feature a large screen like other Formula-style racing wheels, it includes a small OLED display to show various telemetry. There is also a set of rev LEDs above the screen and flag LEDs to either side.

The diameter of just 280mm means this wheel is a little smaller than some others, but that also means it is lightweight and dances about in your hands. I found it to be one of the best F1 wheels, and despite this steering wheel being around for many years, I still regularly use it when racing F1 24 and other open-wheeled sim racing titles.

    Moza Racing FSR Steering Wheel

During 2023, MOZA Racing released a variety of new steering wheels and new wheel bases. One steering wheel that really stood out was the MOZA FSR steering wheel. This wheel is heavily influenced by F1 steering wheels and includes a huge screen on the front. This steering wheel has been around for over a year now, and in 2024, it is still one of my favourite steering wheels. It still receives regular rotation onto my sim rig.

The FSR steering wheel took the groundwork that MOZA had created with the GS GT wheel and added the large screen to make it a much more immersive and complete formula-style steering wheel. The screen can show you a range of live telemetry from various games, including the F1 games, iRacing, ACC and more.

You can change the display on the screen, scrolling between a variety of preset layouts and designs, some of which replicate in-game wheel layouts. Aside from the impressive screen, MOZA has utilised an extremely high build quality that consists of real carbon fibre, a metal construction and leather hand grips.

If you are a part of the MOZA Racing ecosystem, the FSR is the ultimate wheel while racing Formula 1 or Formula-style cars.

Moza Racing GS GT Steering Wheel

The Moza GS GT Steering Wheel has been around for a few years now. It launched as MOZA’s first formula-style steering wheel, and it was released to much praise. In our MOZA GS GT review, we stated that this F1 sim racing wheel briged the gap between F1 and GT style wheels and was one of the best sim racing wheels available. Find out more about the Moza GS in our complete overview of the wheel.

Despite not having any screen on the front of the wheel, the GS GT steering wheel is an incredibly well-built, premium steering wheel. It features a high-quality forged carbon fibre construction, which flows through to the shifter paddles, which are also constructed from forged carbon fibre.

On the front, you have a wide range of inputs, including backlit RGB buttons that can be fully customised. The fully customisable rev bar is one of Moza’s party tricks to make this steering wheel stand out.

This sits proudly at the top of the steering wheel and can be completely customised. You can change the colours of each LED and the bar’s behaviour and timing.

The GS Steering Wheel was a surprise hit of 2022 and continues to be a popular steering wheel in 2024. We have one in our studio and think it is fantastic. You have to have a MOZA Racing wheel base to be able to use this steering wheel, but if you do, then this wheel is a no-brainer for any Formula 1 fan.

    Cube Controls F-Pro

Cube Controls is known for producing high-quality steering wheels, and the F-Pro is the most premium Formula-style steering wheel Cube Controls currently sells. It may not feature a screen on the front of the wheel but everything about the F-Pro screams premium.

    Cube Controls F-Pro

The F-Pro comes in two formats: a wireless Bluetooth model and a wired USB version. This allows you to connect to your chosen wheel base in whichever method works best for you.

The wheel itself features a real carbon-fibre face plate and an aluminium body. This allows for strength and makes for a lightweight model.

The front of the wheel is covered in inputs allowing you to control any part of your car during a race. There are a total of 12 buttons which is the most of any wheel on this list. These are coupled with joysticks and rotary magnetic encoders. All of these inputs work together to form one of the most customisable steering wheels you can purchase.

Cube Controls have equipped the F-Pro with a 70mm PCD allowing it to be mounted to most Formula-style quick releases. This allows it to be compatible with wheel bases from the biggest wheel base manufacturers.

    GSI Formula Pro Elite V2

The Gomez Industries Formula Pro Elite V2 is an extremely good-looking formula-style steering wheel that utilises a very unique design. The main chassis of this F1 wheel incorporates every function you could need to sim race comfortably and make adjustments to your car mid-race.

GSI Formula Pro Elite v2 steering wheel

This sim racing steering wheel is incredibly well built and constructed of real carbon fibre and aluminium. These materials are solid and lightweight, ensuring there is zero flex in the wheel during use.

Much like the Formula Steering Wheel Series 2, there is a large LCD screen on the front of the wheel itself, although Gomez has gone one further by making it a touch screen.

On the front of the wheel are 10 buttons, 5 rotary encoders and a 7-way funky switch. These are all completely customisable allowing you to easily make changes to your car on the fly. To express your flair, you can choose from a large number of colour options, including the neon yellow “Omega” edition in the image above.

Rexing Formula steering wheel Mayaris 2

The Rexing Mayaris 2 is an evolution of one of the best F1 wheels that money can buy. Croatian sim racing brand Rexing has taken the features that made the older Rexing Mayaris an incredible wheel and evolved them, whilst also lowering the price.

The touch screen at the center of this wheel is the real party piece and is larger than in the previous model at 5″ with a 854×480 resolution. Surrounding the screen are 11 RPM LEDs that can be fully customised along with an additional 6 flag lights.

Rexing Mayaris 2 F1 sim racing steering wheel

This F1 style sim racing wheel is extremely well built, being constructed from a full carbon fibre body. The 4.3-inch LCD screen is compatible with a range of software including Simdash and Simhub, allowing you to configure the dash to your own liking.

The wheel’s face has 10 RGB backlit push-buttons, along with a total of 7 rotary encoders positioned around your thumb and on the front of the wheel for easy access allowing for quick adjustments to your car mid-race.

    Sim-Lab Mercedes-AMG F1 Steering Wheel

One of the latest F1 wheels to be released is the incredible Sim-Lab Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team Sim Racing Steering Wheel to give it its full name. While the name isn’t the catchiest, it does explain exactly what this sim racing wheel is.

This is an exact replica of the steering wheel that George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are using during the 2024 Formula 1 season. Sim-Lab has been partnered with Mercedes-AMG for a while, supplying them with sim rigs. Their partnership has expanded, with both brands collaborating to produce this F1 steering wheel.

What makes this sim racing wheel really special is that Sim-Lab has used the same materials and construction method that Mercedes-AMG used to produce their own F1 wheels. Going beyond this, Sim-Lab has used the real CAD data that has been supplied by Mercedes-AMG.

There is a heavy use of hand-crafted carbon fibre throughout. Across the steering wheel, a huge number of inputs are positioned just as they are on Lewis’s and George’s wheels.

An array of thumb encoders lets you adjust your car mid-race in games such as F1 24 and iRacing. On the rear of this steering wheel is a realistic clutch mechanism finished with real-world decals.

There is also a huge 4.3-inch screen at the center of the wheel that allows you to check a range of live telemetry and data mid-race. Mercedes-AMG has shared its real-world dashboard layouts to provide the most realistic and authentic experience possible.

What is the best F1 steering wheel?

The very best F1 steering wheel depends on your budget. I recommend the Fanatec F1 Esports V2, a cheaper F1 wheel. The Thrustmaster SF1000 is a fantastic mid-range F1 steering wheel, while the MOZA FSR is one of the best premium wheels.

Can the Logitech G29 or G923 be used as an F1 wheel?

The budget-friendly Logitech G923 is a circular wheel and one of the most popular and widely used wheels for F1 24. Sim racers often use it to play F1 games. You can also purchase modifications for Logitech wheels that convert the steering wheel into an F1-style wheel rim.
