For the first time in an F1 game, VR is officially supported in F1 22. You can race from a true driver’s perspective in F1 22 and see what a Formula 1 driver sees. Here is everything you need to know about F1 22 VR compatibility.
Codemasters and EA have confirmed that for the first time, F1 22 will have VR support on PC. This means it will work with various VR headsets on PC, with two VR headsets currently confirmed to be compatible.
Racing F1 22 in VR for the first time brings another level of immersion to an already pretty realistic and immersive F1 game. Using VR you can emulate the helmet cam footage that we’ve seen throughout the 2022 F1 season so far.
You will have various challenges to contend with when racing in VR. You’ll be positioned low in the cockpit in a similar seating position to real F1 drivers. This limits how much track and how much of your car you can see.
You’ll also have the halo column directly in your vision. The beauty of racing in VR though is that your natural perspective should help eliminate the halo allowing you to almost look around it.
As well as this new perspective and experience, Codemasters have gone to even more extreme levels to imitate a realistic experience. There will be dirt buildup and rain droplets forming on the visor just like real-world drivers experience.
There’ll also be binaural audio that is designed to bring extra immersion to F1 22 by directing various audio around you.
Unfortunately for PSVR owners, F1 22 won’t have any PS5 VR compatibility. Only sim racers on PC will have access to VR in this year’s game. This means both PS5 and Xbox gamers won’t be able to experience VR and will have to wait until at least F1 23 before console VR support is potentially added.
EA and Codemasters have been relatively vague in explaining which VR headsets will be compatible with F1 22. On their website they only list two VR headsets that are officially compatible with F1 22 on PC. The official stance on VR compatibility is below;
F1® 22 also includes VR compatibility on PC via Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to give you the ultimate immersive F1® experience.
That is all the official website currently says, listing both the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive as compatible with F1 22. However, the Oculus Rift is no longer for sale and the HTC Vive now comes in a wide variety of formats. So as you can imagine, many hopeful gamers could be a little confused as to whether their headset is compatible with F1 22 or not.
But with a little investigative work, we can expand the F1 22 VR compatibility list.
Below are the VR headsets that are compatible with F1 22 on PC:
Using a little bit of investigation, we can safely say that the above VR headsets will be compatible with F1 22. EA and Codemasters say that the HTC Vive is compatible with on PC, meaning that all HTC Vive models should work without issue. This includes the Vive Pro, Vive Pro 2 and Vive Cosmos.
All three of these Vive headsets and the original HTC Vive work on the same platform and are all equally compatible with PC games. The Vive Pro 2 is the newest headset released from HTC and offers outstanding VR performance.
HTC have really dominated the VR market when it comes to high-end headsets. The Vive Pro 2 boasts a wide 120° horizontal field of view (FOV) which widens your viewing experience. The LCD screen also has a whopping 2,448 x 2,448 resolution per eye with a refresh rate of 120Hz.
This performance beats out most other VR headsets and will deliver one of the best F1 22 VR experiences.
The second headset that was officially named by EA and Codemasters as compatible is the Oculus Rift (Now known as the Meta Rift since Facebook’s acquisition). The Rift is no longer available to purchase new and has been replaced by the Meta Quest 2.
When gaming using Steam VR, the Meta Quest 2 is recognised as a Rift headset, which in turn would make it compatible with F1 22.
The Meta Quest 2 is a completely wireless VR headset that makes use of its in-built processor and storage to play games. However, you can link your Meta Quest 2 to your PC via a Link Cable which is sold separately.
This Link Cable allows the Quest 2 to connect to your PC much as the Rift did before it. Using this method, you can play games installed on your PC using the Quest 2 as a traditional headset. The Quest 2 is much cheaper than the HTC Vive headsets but does offer a slight reduction in resolution at 1832 x 1920 per eye.
As EA named the Oculus Rift in particular, this means that both the older Rift and Rift S headsets will be fully compatible with F1 22.
