F1 22 release date

Update – Codemasters and EA have officially announced F1 22, and given a release date of 1st July 2022. Below is a link to the F1 22 announce trailer.

Normally by mid-April Codemasters have revealed the new game and the launch date. We finally received an official release date via a short teaser video which didn’t show very much at all. However, it ended showing the released date of July 1st 2022.

Read our F1 22 release date guide for more information.

F1 22 name change

Codemasters and EA look set on bringing an all-new experience to the 2022 Formula 1 game, and with that comes an updated name format. The 2022 game will be known as F1 22. This follows the trend of other EA Sports titles, and since this is EA’s first real year of full development, it makes sense for them to update this year’s title.

F1 22 new features

While 2022 has seen a fairly dramatic change to how Formula 1 cars look and drive, Codemasters are also hard at work at introducing new game features to the F1 2022 game. These include a substantial addition of supercars being purchasable and driveable in-game.

F1 Life

These supercars could make an appearance in a new career game mode called F1 Life. This could be integrated directly into the career mode, or sit alongside the My Team mode. This game mode will give players a more in-depth feel for how Formula 1 drivers spend their time away from the track.

This new career mode is set to include new real-world cars in the game for the first time, with players being able to unlock, purchase and drive supercars in-game. This feature may only be limited to the single-player career game mode and time trial modes.

EA and Codemasters describe F1 Life as;

“Get a taste of the glitz and glamor of Formula 1® in F1® Life, a new space for you to unlock and show off supercars, clothing, accessories, and more for the world to see.”

It does sound like it was set to feature in the online multiplayer offering as well, however, this seems to be removed from the game this year.

Updated gameplay mechanics

In F1 22 there will be more gameplay mechanics than ever. There is the introduction of broadcast style formation laps, safety car periods and pit stops.

We don’t quite know what “broadcast style” means, but could be anything from more emphasis on these gameplay segments. Or there could be a change to a TV style broadcast during these moments in a race.

The new 2022 F1 car

The biggest change to Formula 1 in 2022 was the new car. We have seen this new car racing at a few tracks now and there are quite a few differences to the last generation of F1 cars. They are heavier, feature less prominent on-body aerodynamics and are generally a little harder to drive.

F1 2022 will feature these new cars meaning there will have to be some major tweaks to the car handling and physics model to best represent these changes in-game. It will hopefully allow players to race closer together, much like drivers have been able to do in real life.

F1 2022 Beta

All Formula 1 games in recent years have had a private beta, so it would be expected that F1 2022 will do the same. This year’s game will be different due to the new 2022 F1 cars, and the inclusion of new game features. So it is highly likely that players will be able to get early access to F1 2022 via a beta.

Read our guide on how last year’s F1 2021 beta worked.

My Team

The My Team game mode will return in F1 2022 as it was one of the most popular game modes from F1 2021. It allows you to build your own Formula 1 team from the ground up and race against all other teams and drivers on the 2022 grid.

Hopefully there will be a series of improvements to this game mode however nothing as been rumoured or confirmed just yet.

VR

VR has been a highly requested feature in F1 games, as it is prominent in many other racing games. VR has been confirmed for F1 22 for the first time, with compatibility for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive on PC. This is designed to give the most immersive F1 experience!

Crossplay

Crossplay is a much-anticipated feature that would allow players to race against other players on different consoles. This would mean that for the first time in an F1 video game, Xbox players could race against their PlayStation counterparts as well as against PC players.

However, it is reported that this game mode won’t feature at launch, and may be added to the game in future updates.

Original worry of a delayed release date

According to reliable journalist Tom Henderson, this year’s Formula 1 game may have been facing a small delay thanks to a change in the main career mode.

This year’s Formula 1 game is rumoured to include supercars for the first time ever. These are apparently included in the game’s main career mode and were planned to be included in multiplayer as well. The premise was to allow you to purchase and race supercars in F1 2022.

However, Tom reports that this feature may be scaled back, with supercars being removed entirely from the multiplayer portion of F1 2022. This is due to FOM (Formula One Management) not being too happy about the prominence of supercars in F1 2022.

Codemasters is reportedly scaling back how prominent supercars are in-game which may have caused a small delay to this year’s game release. Here is a link to the original article by Tom.

However, the released date has now been revealed as the 1st July 2022, meaning it’ll actually arrive even sooner this year than in past years.
