The first week of winter testing was dominated by the Mercedes who put in a very strong performance throughout the week.
The reigning Constructer champions also re-invented the wheel, quite literally. They brought a new system called DAS (Dual-Axis Steering) which allowed their drivers to adjust the toe of the car on the fly.
Bottas set the quickest time of the week of a 1m15.732s on the third day of practice. This gives Mercedes a pretty big advantage over the other competitors heading in to the second week of testing.
Ferrari looked extremely disappointing, with times much further down the time sheet. Vettel also broke down with an engine failure on day 3, which is a big blow for Ferrari. This limited his running to only 100 laps, and he was only capable of putting in the 13th best lap time.
The big thing for this year will be the battle for the mid field. It seems as tight as it’s ever been with Renault, Racing Point and Alpha Tauri all putting in competitive lap times. Renault edged it slightly with a small advantage over Racing Point, however we look forward to seeing this battle play out further in the second week of testing.
