Mexico has always been a really tricky track to drive in the F1 games. There is a huge emphasis on rear traction, although there are also some incredibly fast corners where an aggressive transmission setup is ideal. Not getting the setup right around here can result in a very slippery car, and ultimately a not very fun race.

The good news though, is that with the right car setup, this track is really fun to drive, and wheel to wheel racing is a real possibility.

Aero setup

Starting with the aero setup, I have opted for a relatively low downforce approach of 29 on both front and rear. The pit straight is incredibly long, and that’s followed by another medium length straight. Running a higher downforce setup targeted at the middle or last sector will leave you incredibly vulnerable down these two straights.

I have opted for equal wings on front and rear, as any additional downforce we can get at the rear around Mexico will make the car that much easier to drive.

Transmission setup

With incredibly slow corners such as turns 4, 5 and 6, as well as the super slow final stadium section, rear traction is crucial. I have set the on throttle differential really low at just 45% to target these parts of the track. You can manually raise this using the MFD if you want a little more push through the faster corners.

Then I have the off throttle differential low at just 25%. This will promote slower speed rotation, which is needed when we’re running the front and rear wings at the same value.

Suspension geometry setup

With the geometry, I have it all set to the left once again.

Suspension setup

I have set the suspension to 37 and 4 rather than the commonly used 41 and 1. This will soften the front a bit more, making the car more compliant over some of the kerbs, of which there are plenty that you want to be attacking.

Then go with 15 and 20 on the anti-roll bars. This approach will stabilise the car a bit more at medium and high speed. Round out the suspension with a ride height of 22 and 50, which is pretty high. But again, it’s needed for some of the kerbs and to prevent porpoising on the long pit straight.

Brake setup

Set the brake bias to 53%. This is low, but it frees the front of the car up a little under braking, helping it rotate quicker. And run the pressure at 100% like normal.

Tyre setup

Finally, tyres pressures are set to 28.5psi on the front and 25.5psi on the rear. The high pressure will reduce rolling resistance, increasing our top speed down the pit straight, and this setup keeps all tyres in the working temperature window.

Conclusion

Ultimately, Mexico is a really tricky circuit to create a car setup for. There are distinctly different parts of the circuit, mixing incredibly slow speed, with incredibly high speed. Any car setup will be a compromise, but a focus on rear traction and stability will lead to the most stable car during a race.
